Amazon, Netflix, Google and Facebook are under scrutiny about monopolistic business practices. But the ability to pay highly-talented engineers more than their competition is perfectly legal, and possibly of greater value to their continued dominance than any single business practice. Other companies, unable to provide the equivalent pay or the experience that engineers seek, fall further and further behind. Professional sports leagues prevent the natural process of talent overloading onto a single team by implementing rules to prevent it. These types of rules will be much harder to imagine and implement in a free market economy – but they may be just as important or more efficient than other regulations.
